Rachel and I are learning how to do whip and tongue grafts.  We must be doing something right because 101 out of 109 grafts were successful.  Thanks to the folks at Cummins Nursery, Redbyrd Orchard Cider, and Daring Drake Farm/Blackduck Cidery.

I'm planting some ginger this year in one of our high tunnels.  If all goes well, we'll start digging it sometime in September.

Planting Potatoes

Hot diggedy dog!  Dandelions are in full bloom now and it's time to plant potatoes.  I dig a trench with a middle buster plow and set the pieces by hand, about a foot apart.  Then I hoe a little dirt over the row and the fun begins.  The plants can take a few weeks to emerge, but with a little rain they grow like wildfire.  I hill them a couple of times, watch for potato beetles and leafhoppers, and before I know it I'm digging tote after tote of tender new potatoes.  I dig them with that same middle buster plow.  Nothing like watching those gorgeous tubers rolling up out of the ground.

Lettuce Hope for Spring

The snowfall and cold weather has put spring off for a few days, so I'm back in the greenhouse, thinning some trays.  As farmers, we do our best to work with nature to produce a crop.  But with all of our knowledge and technology, nature still has the better hand.  And she ain't showin' her cards.

Fire Roasted Peppers

3/2/2016

Check out our new line of Fire Roasted Peppers!  With help from our friends at Crooked Carrot Community Supported Kitchen in Ithaca, we've roasted our own organic peppers, included some organic cider vinegar and sea salt, and put them up in jars for you.  We have sweet reds, poblanos, red serranos, green serranos, and habaneros.

For a really tasty sandwich, try some sweet reds on a toasted ciabatta with your favorite local cheese.  We like the serranos and habaneros on our tacos and burritos; the roasting process brings out their sweetness and flavor and takes a bit of the edge off the heat.

Meet the farmers:  Doug, Mary, and Rachel

We moved to the Ithaca area about 9 years ago, bought some land, and started our farm.  Sounds simple.  Both Mary and I studied wildlife biology in college; I worked as a biologist in the midwest for 15 years prior to taking up vegetable farming.  Farming is hard work, as everyone knows, but it's also pretty dang fun.  Mary likes farming too, and her other passion is carpentry, which comes in handy on a farm with barns, outbuildings, and greenhouses to put up.  Rachel, our daughter, helps out on the farm and at our market booth.  She keeps track of all the wild things on the farm, be it foxes, screech owls, or the first tasty bunch of ramps in the spring.

The Season Begins...

Onions and leeks come first.  We're seeding them now in our warm, sunny high tunnel when it's freezing outside; one of vegetable farming's simple pleasures.  It's also the signal that our winter "break" is drawing to a close.  In another month or so we'll be, ready or not, launched into the annual frenzy of plowing, planting, and then later, picking.  But for now, it's low key, and we're savoring it.
